For ten years, Berlin's Pop-Kultur Festival has brought surprising imagery drawn from popular culture to the city. Represented by cats, lakes, mushrooms, corals and roller coasters, the festival stood out from the usual way in which music festivals communicate.
However, after ten years, it was time for something new, so we decided to do the exact opposite of what the festival had stood for until then. We focused on clear communication and pure information, putting the artists — many of whom have yet to be discovered by a wider audience — at the heart of the visuals.
Inspired by the approach and observations of product designers Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukasawa, we aimed for a 'supernormal' design: an accessible form of communication enhanced with special features, such as detailed artist information and silver metallic print, that make the design 'normal' in appearance yet 'super' in functionality and execution.
